便携式轴重秤是通过称量被检测车辆的每一轴（或轴组）的重量，经过累加，得到车辆的总重量。它既可以静态称量，也可以匀速动态称量，在动态称量时，称重仪表可自动收尾而累加出车辆的总重量。该轴重仪还用于公路车辆的限检测或计重收费中，这时需要配套红外光栅、轮轴识别器及称重管理器，完成复杂的称重检测过程。
